The original Chatham Light structures, built-in 1808, consisted of two towers that were replaced in 1841. The lighthouse is 48 feet tall and sits 80-feet above sea level. Aside from the lighthouse, there is also a Coast Guard building on the property and right across from the lighthouse is Lighthouse Beach.
The lighthouse and coast guard station are famous for being key features of the “U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue” which occurred on Feb. 18, 1952. Chatham coast guard officers executed a rescue mission to save 30 sailors who’d vessel was split in two by a massive storm. The story was turned into a movie by Disney in 2016 and was titled, “The Finest Hours.” The movie features Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, and Holliday Grainger.
