Lakes of the Clouds Hut

Lakes of the Clouds Hut

Product Description

Lakes of the Clouds Hut is an iconic spot in the midst of the Presidential Range. It is one of the must-see places in the White Mountains and is the most famous hut run by the AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club). Standing at 5,012 feet, it is the highest hut in New Hampshire. The name of the hut comes from the nearby lake called Lakes of the Cloud that can be seen from the hut. That said, the clouds sometimes do cover the view because the hut is so high up.

The cabin was constructed in 1915 for travelers trekking the wind- and weather-beaten northwest slopes of Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range. It provides trekkers with protection from the harsh weather that this region is known for. Lakes of the Clouds Hut is often fully booked with overnight tourists. It provides bunk room accommodations for 90 (including dinner and breakfast). Day hikers are welcome to rest at the hut – on the outdoor benches or inside the hut’s eating area. Aside from the daily weather report and real-time barometric pressure and wind speed information, there is fresh drinkable water and restrooms available.

The Lakes of the Clouds Trail is a popular trek to get to and from the hut. The 4.4 mile trial is a well-maintained, out-and-back trail.  If you’re looking for a place to stay dry on the south or west side of Mt. Washington, this hut is your best bet.
